History
In 1849, when the area was being developed due to the 1851 Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, Charles Henry Harrod moved his business from East London over to a small shop in Brompton at the location of the current store. He and his son built a successful business around the shop, and as we say, the rest is history.
Harrods is often credited with introducing the first escalator in England in 1898. The introduction of the escalator was a significant event in the history of retail and marked a step forward in the convenience of shopping for customers. The present store was completed in 1905 and is nowadays a popular destination for tourists and locals, attracting millions of visitors yearly.
