The venue
The Electric Ballroom is a mid-sized hall on Camden High Street, directly opposite Camden Town station. It programmes broadly: rock, metal, punk and indie touring bands through the week, club nights at weekends. It has a reputation for a sound system that punches above the room's size, and ticket and drink prices that undercut comparable London venues.
A bit of history
The site began as an Irish dance hall, taken on by Bill Fuller in 1938 as the Buffalo Club and rebuilt to hold 2,000 after wartime bombing destroyed part of it in 1941. For decades it was a social hub for Camden's Irish community. It was renamed the Carousel in the 1960s and became the Electric Ballroom in 1978, going on to host Sid Vicious, The Clash, Joy Division, Madness and The Smiths. A market still runs in the hall by day at weekends.
