The theatre
His Majesty's seats 1,216 across four levels behind an ornate French Renaissance frontage, and the domed auditorium is among the most decorated in London. The Phantom of the Opera has played here since 1986 and the staging is built around the room, so the theatre and the production are hard to separate.
History
Charles J. Phipps designed the building for the actor-manager Herbert Beerbohm Tree, who opened it in April 1897, ran it for twenty years and lived in a flat beneath the dome. Tree founded the drama school in the building that became the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. The name tracks the reigning monarch, so it has alternated between His and Her Majesty's several times since.
Good to know
Piccadilly Circus is a few minutes away and Charing Cross about the same. The dress circle gives the best view for the money; the upper levels are steep.
